Huffmaster Treats Troy Police Officers to ASIS Event

When Huffmaster learned the Detroit Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) would be holding its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner June 5th, the company showed its appreciation by inviting a couple Troy police officers to be their guests for the event.

With Huffmaster’s commitment to community and workplace security, it was a natural decision to honor some officers who have helped earn Troy the title of Michigan’s Safest City this year – and for 12 of the last 17 rankings conducted by the Congressional Quarterly Press. Troy has also regularly ranked as one of the 25 safest cities in America with a population over 75,000 during the past 15 years. Given the city’s proximity to more dangerous communities, that is no small accomplishment.

The comparisons were made using per-capita statistics for each of six different violent crimes: aggravated assault, burglary, murder, rape, robbery and vehicle theft. In all cases Troy had fewer than half the state average, sometimes far fewer.

During 2012, Troy employed 90 police officers to cover the nearly 34 square miles that make up the city. That ratio of 1.10 officers per 1,000 residents is below Michigan’s average of 1.74 per 1,000 residents. Troy police officers responded to 34,286 incidents of all types during 2012.  That Troy was able to rank so well is a testament to the quality of service the police department provides.

Last year Huffmaster teamed up with the Troy Police Department and Walsh Business College, also in Troy, to provide free educational sessions to the business community. These sessions focus on making the community safer, whether from workplace violence or other types of crime. The training and education sessions addressed workplace violence, the active shooter response and technical security solutions for retail environments. The tri-part partnership plans to continue the popular and well-attended sessions in 2014.
